Illegal Trade Officer – Trading Standards
Location: Bolton – fully onsite
Rate: £18.24 per hour PAYE
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:00am–4:00pm
Contract: Until 31 March 2027

Red Snapper Recruitment (RSR) is a public safety and enterprise security recruitment specialist. We are currently recruiting for an Illegal Trade Officer – Trading Standards to join a Regulatory Services team based in Bolton.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in Trading Standards, consumer protection, regulatory enforcement or illegal trade work to support a range of important enforcement and public protection activity.
The Role
Working as part of a Trading Standards team, you will provide technical support and undertake a range of duties relating to consumer protection, illegal trade and regulatory enforcement.
The role will include supporting work around tobacco, vapes and other illegal or prohibited products, as well as responding to intelligence, complaints and requests for service.
You will work alongside experienced Trading Standards officers and may be involved in both informal and formal enforcement activity.
Key Responsibilities

• Undertake specified Trading Standards work and related regulatory issues as part of a wider team.
• Provide technical support to senior and principal Trading Standards officers.
• Investigate intelligence, complaints and requests for service.
• Support enforcement activity and prepare documentation for potential legal proceedings.
• Attend court when required.
• Undertake work relating to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
• Support enforcement activity relating to the disposable vapes ban.
• Liaise with other agencies and relevant partners.
• Support Home Authority and Business Link work.
• Prepare reports and attend meetings as required.
• Provide technical advice and assistance to colleagues.
• Support public awareness and consumer protection initiatives.
• Assist with other Regulatory Services work as required.
• Undertake relevant training to develop your technical expertise.
• Maintain accurate records and provide regular updates to management on workload and progress.
• Contribute to the delivery of high-quality customer-focused services.
• Promote equality, diversity and inclusive working practices.
• Remain flexible to changing service requirements and priorities.

There may also be a requirement to support emergency or out-of-hours activity on an occasional basis in line with local emergency arrangements.
About You
We are looking for candidates who have relevant experience within Trading Standards, regulatory services, consumer protection or enforcement.
You should have:

• Experience of working within a regulatory, Trading Standards or similar enforcement environment.
• Knowledge of consumer protection legislation and enforcement processes.
• Experience of dealing with complaints, intelligence or requests for service.
• An understanding of formal and informal enforcement procedures.
• The ability to gather, assess and act upon information effectively.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to prepare clear reports and documentation.
• Confidence liaising with colleagues, businesses, members of the public and external agencies.
• The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a team.
• A flexible and professional approach to changing priorities.

Experience relating to tobacco, vapes, illegal trade or prohibited products would be particularly relevant.
