Probation Service Officer, Pre Release Team – HMP Bronzefield (2553B)

About the role

This role is based at HMP Bronzefield and focuses on supporting women approaching release from custody. You will play a key role in coordinating resettlement planning, working closely with internal teams and external agencies to ensure individuals are prepared for a successful transition back into the community.

You will manage a caseload of offenders, assess their needs, and facilitate access to services such as housing, probation, and rehabilitative support, helping to reduce reoffending and promote safer communities.

Location: HMP Bronzefield
Pay Rate: £14.99 per hour PAYE / £19.74 per hour UMB
Contract: 13 weeks initially
Hours: Full-time (flexibility required)

Overview of the Role

  • Provide pre-release and resettlement support to approximately 30–40 offenders per month
  • Carry out assessments to identify needs and risks
  • Coordinate referrals to housing providers and partner agencies
  • Support offender management processes for low to medium risk cases
  • Attend and contribute to multi-agency meetings, including pre-release planning and public protection forums
  • Maintain accurate case records and ensure compliance with policies and timescales
  • Build strong working relationships with residents, prison staff, and external stakeholders
  • Support individuals at the point of release to ensure continuity of care and support

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews and assessments to identify support needs
  • Complete referrals and follow up with external agencies to ensure positive outcomes
  • Liaise regularly with housing providers, and rehabilitative services
  • Maintain up-to-date case management records using relevant IT systems
  • Contribute to safeguarding, risk management, and public protection processes
  • Attend internal and external meetings as required
  • Support residents with complex needs, including those at risk of reoffending
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and partner organisations to deliver effective resettlement plans

Person Specification

  • Possession of a probation services officer level qualification NVQ level 3 in Criminal Justice or a minimum 5 GCSE’s at Grade C and above, including English and Maths, or equivalent
  • Evidence of working for a recognised provider of probation services in the last 5 years.
  • 12 months relevant experience of working with a diverse range of people on probation who have experienced a range of social/personal difficulties and the need to use tact and discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive issues, including working with groups and individuals to motivate and change behaviour. 
  • Experience of risk assessment and management, including the ability to use/learn quickly, risk assessment tools including OASys and RSR (and potentially SARA) as pertaining to people on probation and the impact on victims of crime.
  • Experience of promoting equality, inclusion and diversity, with an understanding of and commitment to equal opportunities, inclusion and diversity good practice.
  • Experience of writing detailed reports to strict deadlines and quality standards
