Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. Every week, we carry out hundreds of inspections and regulatory visits throughout England and publish the results online. We also report on standards across the country and are accountable directly to Parliament.

Our Education Directorate’s focus is on policy development in the early years, schools and further education and skills remits. We’re also responsible for the continuous improvement and development of Ofsted's education inspection policy and methodology and driving improvement through the education system, while keeping a clear focus on pupils.

About the role

This vital role sits in the Unregistered Schools Team (UST) which investigates settings operating as schools without registration across England. The team works closely with the DfE, CPS, local authorities, police and other agencies to take action against illegal settings and to protect the children attending them.

Your challenge will be to work with a small team of HMI, legal and policy staff to help identify, investigate and prosecute unregistered schools. You’ll play a leading role in the investigation of possible illegal schools, identifying new settings, securing evidence and preparing cases for prosecution. You’ll also get to use your invaluable knowledge and experience to help us develop a new strategy, expand on and strengthen the team’s investigatory practice and introduce new methods.

About you

An experienced criminal investigator, with the ability to collate and evaluate intelligence and information from various sources, you’re keen to use your knowledge to bring new ideas and insights to the team’s work. As well as a proven ability to record and retain evidence in a format that’s evidentially admissible to support the investigative process, you’re used to conducting interviews and taking statements in accordance with Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.

What’s more, you have working experience of the Disclosure Officers role ensuring compliance with the Criminal Proceedings and Investigations Act 1996 and other relevant legislation and guidance. Flexible, confident and able to show initiative from the outset, you’re skilled in the use of use IT packages, systems and/or databases and able to quickly grasp the legislation that underpins the work involved in investigating unregistered schools.
